Mollie O’Hara Butler, Austin, works as a fundraising consultant with Bacon, Lee and Associates. She is married to Steve Butler `96, a shareholder at Graves, Dougherty, Hearon and Moody.
In 2006, Chris Gardner '95 was named Hays Independent School District's Teacher of the Year. Gardner recalls, "You know how everyone nominated for an Oscar says, 'It's just an honor to be nominated?' Well, I get that now. The best part of it all was being nominated alongside all the teachers on my campus whom I most respect."
On November 4, 2006, Sara Alvis Daly received a Young Alumna Acheivement Award from the Association of Southwestern University Alumni. The Young Alumna/Alumnus Acheivement Award is given to former Southwestern students who have graduated in the last ten years and whose acheivements in the civic and/or professional realm set a standard of excellence. The following citation was read to Sara as she received her award.
Originally from San Antonio, entrepreneur J. Javier "Jay" Uribe came to Southwestern looking to thrive in the small campus community and to take advantage of a liberal arts education. Once here, Uribe took an interest in studying physiology and body movement and obtained a B.A. in kinesiology. He notes, "I really liked Professor Jimmy Smith, and I liked that what I was learning related to my main interest, sports. At the time, I really wanted to be a coach."
George Cruz was born and raised in Dallas, Texas, the youngest of three children. A product of private schools, Cruz chose to enroll at Southwestern because he appreciated the academic challenges and the small town setting.
During her senior year at Southwestern, Sara Alvis '95 was recruited by the CIA. She graduated in 1995 with degrees in Political Science and French, as well as mention in the Academic Distinction List and the Gertrude Solomon Award for Excellence in French. She started working with the CIA while attending graduate school at the George Washington University in Washington D.C. During her first year there, Alvis took part in a State Department internship which took her to work at the U.S. embassy in Paris, France.
Mollie O’Hara Butler, CFRE, serves St. Edward’s University as the Executive Director of Development. In addition to her own fundraising work, she guides the progress of the university’s $65 million campaign and manages the development staff.
Ana Perea has found her off-stage calling as the theatre program facilitator for Austin's American Institute for Learning (AIL) and the Cultural Warriors theatre troupe. AIL works with 16- to 21-year-olds who have had difficulty succeeding in the public school system or who have given up and dropped out.
Claire Smith '95 admits that working as a freelance musician in New York City has its highs and lows. But for her, there are moments like Dec. 3, 2003, that make it all worthwhile. That evening she performed on stage and helped choreograph the staging of "Fiddlefest," a benefit concert at Carnegie Hall that included such musicians as Itzhak Perlman, Pinchas Zukerman, Joshua Bell, Yo-Yo Ma and Bobby McFerrin.
"I also spend time trying to recruit the partners' children to go to Southwestern. I took so much away from my time there, especially the friends I made and the wonderful professors who were there for me in and out of the classroom."
It was in the spring of 1994, during Brian Jackson's junior year at Southwestern, when a coveted internship at NBC Studios in Washington D.C. introduced him to experiences ranging from the mundane to the sensational. One of the latter occasions involved whisking First Lady Hillary Clinton through the maze of NBC in preparation for a nationally televised town hall meeting on health care reform with a panel that included former Senate Majority Leader and Presidential hopeful Bob Dole and former Surgeon General C. Everett Koop.
He taught two-year-olds by day and played alternative rock music by night. For two years after graduating from Southwestern University, Marshal Crenshaw worked part-time as an assistant at Georgetown's Community Montessori School while also playing in Mugwump, a band he started with three of his fraternity brothers.
From the very first day of school, ninth and tenth grade students taking Southwestern University alumna Lee Silva's biology class know they're in a very unusual classroom. It's not just the Dallas Stars paraphernalia hanging from the walls that reflects Silva's fanaticism for hockey; it's the unconventional way their teacher begins the course.
Southwestern University alumna Laura Sewell's '95 first professional acting job came in the third grade when she and her three siblings were hired for a six-week run of A Christmas Carol. All previous ambitions of one day becoming a ballerina vanished the moment she walked on stage.
