FEATURED STORIES
The Association President Welcomes New Graduates
During Commencement May 12, Joe Seeber ’63 welcomed more than 300 graduates as the newest members of The Association of Southwestern University Alumni. Seeber presented each graduate with an "S" lapel pin, as an outward symbol of membership in The Association. The 2007 Commencement speaker was Gwen Griffin Sherman ’80, who serves as director of finance and administration for the Seattle-based Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Look in this summer's edition of the Southwestern@Georgetown magazine to read more about the Class of 2007 through "Senior Stories."
Are College Rankings Fair?
This month, President Jake B. Schrum ’68 was one of 12 liberal arts college presidents who signed a letter urging college presidents not to participate in the “reputational” part of the annual U.S. News & World Report survey, in which college presidents are asked to evaluate other institutions. The letter also urges colleges not to use the U.S. News rankings in promotional materials as an indication of the quality of their college or university, due to a large portion of the rankings (25 percent) derived from the “reputational” survey, as opposed to more objective measures of academic quality. Click here to read President Schrum's letter. Fox News Austin covered this story. Click here to view a video clip.
Affordability Estimator Receives Recognition
In December 2007, Southwestern introduced an online Affordability Estimator to give prospective students a more realistic view of the financial investment and available assistance to attend Southwestern, since 85 percent of Southwestern students receive some type of financial assistance. The Affordability Estimator calculates the approximate annual cost of attendance based upon a student's family income and class rank. Last month, the Affordability Estimator received the Grand Award in the World Wide Web Page category from the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) District IV. Check out the Affordability Estimator, which will continue to be revised and improved.

Going Green: Southwestern Signs Treaty Committed to Sustainable Living
The Southwestern University campus is looking much greener to Ben Johnson ’07 these days, but it’s not because the spring rains have left the lawns lush and green. After nearly a year of effort, Johnson and other students on campus have succeeded in convincing the University to formally commit to a more sustainable, or “green” way of doing things. That commitment became official April 19, when University President Jake B. Schrum ’68 added Southwestern to a growing list of colleges and universities around the world that have signed a treaty known as the Talloires (“Tal-wahr”) Declaration. Click here to read more.
