Dallas Museum of Art: Ashes of Vesuvius Exhibit
The Office of Alumni Relations encourages you to explore an exhibit at the Dallas Museum of Art. Thomas Howe, professor of art and art history and holder of the Herman Brown chair at Southwestern, serves as coordinator general of the
Restoring Ancient Stabiae Foundation Project and co-curator of
Ashes of Vesuvius, In Stabiano: Exploring the Ancient Seaside Villas of the Roman Elite. This special exhibition continues to tour the country and has made a stop at the Dallas Museum of Art (
1717 North Harwood, Dallas). The
Ashes of Vesuvius, In Stabiano: Exploring the Ancient Seaside Villas of the Roman Elite exhibit will be open through Oct. 7, with a stunning collection of archaeological objects from the ancient Roman site of Stabiae (modern Castellammare di Stabia). Many are aware that Mount Vesuvius’ eruption in A.D. 79 buried the famous town of Pompeii, Italy. But, few people know that it also buried Stabiae, a seaside enclave of the rich and famous about three miles away, at the foot of the Sorrento-Amalfi Coast. The exhibit tells the stories of four villas owned by wealthy Romans who spent the summer months in this town by the bay—Villa San Marco, Villa del Pastore, Villa Arianna and Villa Carmiano.

Southwestern Hosts Workshop for Future Hispanic Leaders
More than 200 of the country’s top high school juniors and seniors visited Southwestern University July 15-22 to participate in the Texas Lorenzo de Zavala Youth Legislative Session (LDZ) sponsored by the National Hispanic Institute (NHI). Program organizers welcomed nearly 250 participants this year. Although primarily Texas students, there were some out-of-state participants as well as a few students from Mexico. The focus of this year’s program was teaching students about community organization. Participants spent the first few days of the program on the Southwestern campus learning how state government works and electing students who will serve in actual government roles. The students set up legislation and learned about effective caucusing. They then traveled to Austin to hold a mock legislative session in the state capitol. The program concluded with a Supreme Court-style trial on July 20 and closing ceremonies. Click here to read more. NHI was founded by Southwestern University Distinguished Alumnus Ernesto Nieto ’64 in 1979.
Theatre Professor and Students Attend Program in Bulgaria
A Southwestern University theatre professor and six students traveled to Bulgaria this summer to participate in a unique theater-training program called the Rhodopi International Theater Collective (R.I.T.C.). The group arrived in Sofia July 13, moved to Plovdiv, and eventually settled in Smolyan – a town in the Rhodopi Mountains near Bulgaria’s border with Greece. The Rhodopi Mountains are considered to be the origin of Western theater, music and performance. The R.I.T.C. attracts theater practitioners, scholars and students from around the world. Each year, a different world myth is selected. This year the program will focus on the Babylonian epic of Gilgamesh and its literary and historical counterparts. Click here to read more.
