Pirate Athletics
The Southwestern University Pirate Baseball team ended their 2003 season with a 10-inning thriller against Millsaps College. Millsaps defeated SU 11-8 to capture the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference baseball championship. Southwestern finished the season at 27-18 and second in the SCAC (Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference).
Former SU pitcher Forrest Martin '03 signed a contract with the Seattle Mariners on Wednesday, May 8. He has reported to Phoenix, AZ for extended Spring Training. After the draft in June, the team will assign rookies to their lower level teams. The last Pirate to sign a professional contract was Matt Gelotti '00 with the Milwaukee Brewers.
Southwestern University's men's and women's track teams both placed well in SCAC competition. The SU men's track team placed 8th of nine teams. SU women placed 8th of nine teams with just five team members scoring a total of nine points. Eight Southwestern University entrants exceeded their season best times.
The Southwestern golf and tennis teams also had impressive seasons. Visit the athletics pages at our web site for more information.
Campus Campaign Tops 64% !
The Campus Campaign, during which faculty and staff volunteers personally contacted their colleagues for gifts in support of the Strategic Plan for 2010, reached a successful conclusion on April 30, with 64% campus wide participation to date. The housekeeping staff achieved 100% participation, by far the largest department to do so. The successful campaign was led by Kendall Richards, Professor of Mathematics and Computer Science and Christine Bowman '93, Associate Director of Admission.
