2005 Brown Symposium Explores Building Just and Loving Relationships
FOR LOVE AND JUSTICE: Breaking the Cycles of Intimate Violence, is the topic of Southwestern University's 27th annual Brown Symposium, Feb. 10-11, 2005. This symposium will focus on promising new approaches to the building of just and loving relationships, and to the prevention of intimate violence. The participants are pioneers in this effort, finding ways to enlarge the work of love and justice, recruiting men to the cause of violence prevention, and countering the glorification of gender violence in popular culture that proposes destructive images of womanhood and manhood to young people growing up. The speakers will address legal, psychological and spiritual issues; they will offer ways to break the recurring cycles of intimate violence, to heal the maladies that produces them, and to promote the love and justice that provide health and fulfillment to the human family. As part of the 2005 Brown Symposium, an alumni reception will be held Thursday, February 11 at 5 p.m. in the Howry Center. To learn more visit <

ALUMNI HAPPENINGS:
'Tis the Season
During this season of gift-giving, Southwestern's Annual Fund staff is counting its many blessings.
Since July 2004, 1,770 Southwestern alumni, parents, and friends have given nearly $560,000 to the University's Annual Fund, which will fund much of the scholarship support needed each year.
Students who receive University scholarships are the direct beneficiaries of your gifts. One such student is junior Kristen Meerbrey (Houston), and she knows quite a bit about giving, too, as you can read in her profile by visiting <
http://www.southwestern.edu/whoswho-archive/0403stu.html>.
If you'd like to a make a gift to support students like Kristen, visit the University's secure website at <
http://www.southwestern.edu/development/make-a-gift.html>. Gifts submitted on-line by December 31 (or postmarked December 31) will count as deductions on your 2004 tax return.
New Year Brings New Opportunities for Alumni Volunteers
In January, Southwestern University alumni will be invited to vote on a new Constitution & Bylaws for the Association of Southwestern University Alumni. This important document reflects several years of work by the Alumni Self-Study Commission, the Alumni Board of Directors, an Implementation Steering Committee, and several alumni task force teams. The changes in the Constitution & Bylaws are a part of an overall effort to invigorate the Association of Southwestern University Alumni by providing more opportunities for meaningful engagement. Watch your mailbox for voting information and directions on how to nominate yourself or other alumni for leadership roles.

The Sarofim School of Fine Arts Presents the Musical, Hair
Hair opened on Broadway in 1968 and immediately became a smash hit. It pushed every hot-button topic and broke every theatrical and societal rule, while speaking to a new generation of disenfranchised theatre-goers.
Hair is simply a revue, showing practically every aspect of the 1960's counterculture in a variety of musical styles, dance, and stage effects. Its references to race relations, drugs, free love, peace, the questioning of authority, and overwhelmingly positive message, make it a production not to miss. This production contains mature content.
