FEATURED STORIES
Southwestern Responds to the Hurricanes Katrina and Rita
In the aftermath of tragedies like Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, Southwestern is especially mindful of what it means to be a community especially a "liberal arts community whose values and actions encourage contributions toward the well-being of humanity." As Gulf Coast residents evacuated for Hurricane Rita, many faculty, staff, and alumni offered to host evacuees in their homes. The University responded as well by cancelling classes so that it could provide shelter to more than 100 family members of current SU students. Residence Life and the Physical Plant provided mattresses and sheets for these families. Most were able to return to home on Sunday, September 25. President Schrum commented, "I have never been more proud to serve as president of this University." If you are in need of assistance or would like to offer help to other members of the SU community in need, please e-mail
alumni@southwestern.edu. All needs and offers will be posted on the
SU Hurricane Message Board. Read more about SU's response to Hurricanes
Katrina and
Rita.

Timlin and Stanton Reunite in Red Sox / Yankee Series
In a twist that seems only to happen with roster moves at the close of baseball seasons, former Southwestern Pirate teammates
Mike Timlin ’88 and
Mike Stanton ’89 were reunited with the Boston Red Sox, for a three-game series with the New York Yankees during the weekend of September 30 - October 2. Timlin and Stanton played for former Head Baseball Coach Jim Mallon at Southwestern in 1986. Both Timlin and Stanton played high school baseball in Midland, TX. The Red Sox went on to beat the Yankees for two out of the three game series. To read more about this special reunion, visit

CAMPUS HIGHLIGHTS
Pirate Bikes Roll Onto Campus
Students at Southwestern University don't have any more excuses for being late for class. A fleet of 30 shiny new yellow bicycles is now available for students to ride anywhere on campus. The bicycles were purchased with the assistance of Heidi Meyer Curry, whose brother,
Walter P. "Wally" Meyer ’86, died in 2004 following a bicycle accident in Austin. The new "Pirate bikes" all have stickers on the back that say "In memory of Wally Meyer ’86 and his zest for life and cycling." If the program is successful, the bikes will be made available to students, faculty and staff for off-campus use as well. Southwestern is the first university in Texas to offer a free bicycle program.

LIFELONG LEARNING
Prepare for 2006 Brown Symposium "GNP or Gross National Well-being?"
The 2006 Brown Symposium (XXVIII) at Southwestern University presents the topic of “GNP or Gross National Well-being?” on February 9-10, 2006. The 2006 Brown Symposium will focus on the latest theoretical research and findings on well-being from economics, neuroscience, and psychology. This symposium's intent is to encourage us to go beyond measuring well-being indirectly in terms of dollars or total consumption and to look deeper and assess societal and individual happiness by focusing on and measuring quality of life. To prepare for this year's topic, Dr. A.J. Senchack, Professor of Economics and Business, recommends two books, Richard Layard's (2005)
Happiness: Lessons from a New Science and Bruno Frey and Alois Stutzer's (2002)
Happiness and Economics: How the Economy and Institutions Affect Well-Being. For other suggested readings,
click here. Additional information on the 2006 Brown Symposium will be provided in a later issue of
News from SU for Alumni.

Bedside Manners: One Doctor’s Reflections on the Oddly Intimate Encounters Between Patient and Healer, Dr. Watts describes the wide-range of encounters, from the emotive to the unusual, that both patients and doctors experience. Dr. David Watts' lecture, "
The Doctor-Patient Relationship: Stories that Define its Shape and Powers," is scheduled for October 11, 2005 at 7:00 p.m. in the Lois Perkins Chapel. Following the lecture, a book signing and reception will be held in the Bishops Lounge, McCombs Campus Center. For additional information, please contact the Office of Alumni and Parent Relations at 1-800-960-6363.
