In spirit of the Homecoming and Reunion Weekend theme "The Story of Southwestern," the University is collecting books to be used as decorations for the Homecoming Picnic, scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 4. After Homecoming, all books collected will be given to

Babysitting Service Offered During Reunion Parties
Looking for a babysitter while you attend your reunion party? Look no further. The First United Methodist Church of Georgetown is offering its services Saturday, Nov. 4, from 5-9 p.m. The cost is $15 for the first child and $10 for each additional child. Register for the 6th Annual Jameson 5K
Runners, walkers and supporters of the Jaysn Jameson Memorial Scholarship can now register for the 6th annual Jameson 5K race by clicking here. The 5K race is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 4, at 8 a.m. and begins at the Corbin J. Robertson Center at Southwestern University. Early registration costs $15 for the general public and $10 for students and participants over the age of 55. Late registration (after Oct. 27) creates an additional $5 charge. Come enjoy a fun, friendly 5K run/walk through and around Southwestern and Georgetown.

Alumni Hospitality House
Looking for the perfect place to meet up with your closest Southwestern friends? This year, the Alumni Council is sponsoring an Alumni Hospitality House throughout Homecoming, Nov. 3-5, 2006. Located directly across the street from the Roy and Lillie Cullen (Ad) Building, in the San Gabriel House Bed and Breakfast, the Hospitality House will be open from 10 a.m. until 2 a.m. Friday and Saturday so that you have a place to meet your old friends and make new ones. Special groups hosting gatherings include alumni from the 1940s, the Houston Association, the Dallas Association, the alumni of Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity and the alumnae of Delta Delta Delta Fraternity. Find out when your group is meeting by picking up a listing of special receptions at the Check-in/Registration Table.
Alumni Choir to Sing at Homecoming Worship Service
All former choir members are invited to sing with the Alumni Choir during the annual Homecoming Worship Service, Nov. 5, at 11 a.m. Henry Holloway ’50 will conduct. If you are interested in joining us, there are three rehearsals, a performance of the “Alma Mater” and our participation in the worship service scheduled during Homecoming and Reunion Weekend:

Sherri Haygood Babcock ’
70 Receives Distinguished Alumna Award
Sherri Haygood Babcock ’70 received the 2006 Distinguished Alumna Award Oct. 21. The Distinguished Alumna/us Award is the highest honor annually awarded by the Association of Southwestern University Alumni. Recipients exemplify the qualities of excellence as taught and represented by Southwestern. Events surrounding Babcock's Distinguished Alumna Award ceremony focused on diversity, a topic she has had a passion for since struggling as a woman in the male-dominated field of advertising. Events planned for the day included a chapel service that celebrated cultural differences in worship and a forum featuring Southwestern graduates of different backgrounds.

Red and Charline McCombs Receive 2006 President's Philanthropy Award
Red ’49 and
Charline Hamblin McCombs ’50 of San Antonio received the 2006 President's Philanthropy Award from Southwestern University Sept. 28, at a dinner on campus. Since 1971, the McCombs have given more than $8 million to Southwestern.

"Society, Not Government, Must Solve Higher Education Woes"
President Jake B. Schrum ’68 wrote an op-ed piece titled "Society, not government, must solve higher education woes" for the
Austin American-Statesman. Here is a short blurb from Schrum's article ... This week, U.S. Education Secretary Margaret Spellings will release the final report of her Commission on the Future of Higher Education. The report, which has been a year in the making, calls for some sweeping changes in American higher education. Some of the recommendations in the report - such as simplifying the forms required of families to obtain financial aid for college, and providing additional resources for students who want to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics - are commendable. Others, such as creating a national database to track student progress, cause considerable concern for college presidents. ...

Student Recognized for Work as Advocate for the Disabled
First-year student Amy Litzinger ’10 was recognized this month for her efforts to improve the lives of persons with disabilities. Litzinger is one of six students selected to receive a $5,000 scholarship from the
Texas Conference for Women. Litzinger is receiving the scholarship given to a student who plans to pursue a career in the area of public service. Litzinger is a board member of the Texas Youth Leadership Forum and is one of 12 youths from across the country selected for the National Council on Disability Youth Advisory Committee, which advises Congress on issues related to persons with disabilities. Texas Gov. Rick Perry also appointed her to the Texas Children’s Policy Council, and in July 2005, she helped former President George H.W. Bush give out awards at an event at the Kennedy Center marking the 15th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act. Litzinger is majoring in political science and English. After graduating from Southwestern, she aspires to earn a master’s degree in public policy or attend law school.
Southwestern Receives Grant to Help Community College Students to Transfer
Southwestern University received an $85,000 grant that will be used to encourage minority and low-income students at community colleges to transfer to the University. The grant is from TG, a nonprofit corporation headquartered in Round Rock, Texas, that helps students secure federal higher education loans. This is the second year that TG's Public Benefit Grant Program has awarded grants to advance college access, student retention and educational research. Southwestern is one of 28 institutions and non-profit organizations receiving grants from TG this year.

Southwestern Students Star in New Video
Two students from Southwestern play a starring role in a new video that has been distributed to every middle and high school in the state of Texas. Rebecca Rivera ’09 and Angelica Castillo ’09 agreed to be filmed for a video the
Texas Education Agency (TEA) was producing to show middle and high school students what to expect in college. Rivera is one of three students featured in the English version of the video and Castillo is one of four students featured in the Spanish version of the video. The video covers topics such as study skills, the college classroom, campus life and living away from home. Numerous Southwestern faculty members, students and facilities appear in the video. TEA produced the videos for its GEAR UP project, which is funded by the U.S. Department of Education.

What's New in Pirate Athletics
The Southwestern University women’s golf team won its second tournament of the season. The team is currently ranked in the top-10 in multiple national polls. The Pirates are ranked seventh in the National Golf Coaches Association Coaches Poll that was released Oct. 4. Plus, Jameson Otto ’07, of the cross country team, was named the SCAC Runner of the Week, the second time he has received the honor, for his performance at the Texas Lutheran Invitational.
