Interested in the Environment?: Alumni Connection Group Forming
Interested in the environment? We’re forming an
alumni connection group so that alumni can come together around environmental issues facing this world as well as to create support for environmental initiatives that are being led by students, faculty and staff at Southwestern. Our group would be the first of its kind and is one that our school is in great need of organizing. We would receive updates from current students as to what is occurring on campus with regard to the environment and sustainability initiatives. This would give us an opportunity to share our experience and knowledge and support campus projects. Some preliminary goals of the group would be to elect/decide leadership positions and explore the ways in which we can help with the promotion of the Environmental Studies department at Southwestern. If you are interested in participating in these efforts, please contact
Ben Johnson ’07 or the
Office of Alumni and Parent Relations. There is great momentum at Southwestern right now and it is time for alumni to step up to the challenge and support our alma mater.

Dallas Museum of Art: Ashes of Vesuvius Exhibit
The Office of Alumni Relations encourages you to explore an exhibit at the Dallas Museum of Art. Thomas Howe, professor of art and art history and holder of the Herman Brown chair at Southwestern, serves as coordinator general of the
Restoring Ancient Stabiae Foundation Project and co-curator of
Ashes of Vesuvius, In Stabiano: Exploring the Ancient Seaside Villas of the Roman Elite. This special exhibition continues to tour the country and the Dallas Museum of Art (
1717 North Harwood, Dallas). The
Ashes of Vesuvius, In Stabiano: Exploring the Ancient Seaside Villas of the Roman Elite exhibit will be open through Oct. 7, with a stunning collection of archaeological objects from the ancient Roman site of Stabiae (modern Castellammare di Stabia). Many are aware that Mount Vesuvius’ eruption in A.D. 79 buried the famous town of Pompeii, Italy. But, few people know that it also buried Stabiae, a seaside enclave of the rich and famous about three miles away, at the foot of the Sorrento-Amalfi Coast. The exhibit tells the stories of four villas owned by wealthy Romans who spent the summer months in this town by the bay—Villa San Marco, Villa del Pastore, Villa Arianna and Villa Carmiano.

Ashes of Vesuvius exhibit.

Theatre Performance: The Country Wife
The Southwestern University Theatre Department invites alumni to attend
The Country Wife. Meet Horner, Quack, Mr. and Mrs. Pinchwife, Sparkish and Mrs. Squeamish in this bawdy 17th-century Restoration comedy. This tale is full of seduction, devotion, cuckolds and lust and contains a plot filled with outrageously racy comedy. Banned for 170 years because of its licentious plot and language, this play would have made Shakespeare blush. Performances are scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 24 and Thursday, Oct. 25 at 7 p.m. and Friday, Oct. 26 and Saturday, Oct. 27 at 8 p.m. and Sunday, Oct. 28 at 3 p.m., in the Jesse and Mary Gibbs Jones Theatre of
The Alma Thomas Fine Arts Center. This performance is recommended for mature audiences. When available,
order your tickets online.
